Low Platelets

A lower-than-adequate blood platelet count, a condition also referred to as Thrombocytopenia, can occur in the blood system when platelets are depleted from circulation faster than the bone marrow can replace them. The role of healthy blood platelets is to stop blood loss by binding together and “plugging” any damaged vessels. The immune system’s inability to accomplish this recovery tactic can be traced to many sources.

Artefactual (false) Thrombocytopenia is the name given to the condition where proteins (antibodies) become attached to the platelets, disturbing proper functionality. Congenital thrombocytopenia is the name for low platelet count traced to several rare inherited blood diseases. When megakarocytes, bone marrow cells lose their abilty to produce a adequate platelet supply, Defective platelet production occurs.  This can take place in a system that has been disabled by chemotherapy, viral infections such as HIV, and bone marrow abnormalities such as myelodysplasia, marble bone disease (osteopetrosis), or myelofibrosis –  an over-abundance of fibrous tissue, impairing platelet production.

Diminished platelet survival is the name given to the removal of platelets from circulation due to infections such as HIV, ingestion of medicines such as quinine - used to treat malaria, and any disease where the abnormal production of specific antibodies occurs such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosis, and chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Yet another cause of platelets being depleted from circulation is through abnormal distribution or dilution.

Some of the signs and symptoms of a low blood platelet count may include easy or excessive bruising, superficial bleeding into the skin that appears as a rash of pinpoint-sized reddish-purple spots (petechiae) - usually occurring on the lower legs, any prolonged bleeding from cuts, blood or urine in stools, unusually heavy menstrual flows, or profuse bleeding during surgical procedures.
